I thought it was due to a low car battery but since coming across this site I am less hopeful. I banged the dash checking for intermittent connection of course — no effect. The good news is that to unfreeze the system just push the power button in on the volume control and hold it until a reboot is forced. So I have a 2016 t4r that I got maybe one month ago. I agree with other that it is not a very good system. It usually takes between3 and 5 minutes to reboot. The screen just goes blank, the music goes off, and then it reboots. In a 30 minute drive I get a disconnect and reconnect 20 times. Always drive safely and obey traffic laws. Dealer said to bring it in for diagnostics. The gps on Ford is superior to Highlander.
My problem is no one can tell me how much a map update will cost. I am out of warranty because I exceeded the 36K miles. Car has almost 78k on it and was out of warranty when I purchased it. They should issue a recall on all radios for anyone having this problem and make it good for 10 years after date of first sale. There should be a recall. The screen is sometimes completely unresponsive, sometimes an item I press will come up after a delay, sometimes not at all. Battery capacity will decrease with time and use. It is no safer having the lockout while moving as to trying to use the voice recognition. The cable can be used with the iPhone connected but not without.
