Indeed, the most significant development of the new 3-Series is the brake technology. Out back, to help other drivers gauge how hard you are stopping, the brake lights vary their intensity to the degree of pedal pressure. The G was faster 306 hp v 255 , but the 330xi has more than enough power, great brakes, very tight steering feel, infinitely adjustable sport seat, and really nice styling inside and out. Higher-pressure fuel injection for better fuel atomization and new engine-management electronics top it off. Most buyers will recognize the new car as a 3-series, even with the curvier elements of the 5-series around the front and an interior theme that also mimics its bigger brother. The I drive system is excellent, and a worth while upgrade from my previous non-iDrive car. It performs superbly in every regard, even after 135,000 miles.
What does this car say about you? An automatic with manual mode is available as an option. It has nearly all of the luxury, comfort, and performance features found in its larger, more expensive relative either standard or available, and adds a few of its own. The main difference between the 325 and the 330? The only car I'd trade this one for is a rag top M3, also in imola red. The iDrive knob twists and moves on all axes, allowing control of the car's functions. Although these figures were recorded on a surface with poor grip, they match the performance of the current-generation 330i with Performance package with its much larger rear tires.
The 1-series has killed the Compact. The N52 that is fitted in my car is excellent, with fantastic torque a beautiful sound and honestly brutal performance, all overtakes become a non-event as the car's in-gear acceleration in 3rd or 4th is incredible. Speed-sensitive power steering is standard, with the Active Steering system previously offered on the 5 Series and 7 Series available. What are you likely to buy next? We'd probably do without the nav system, and have encountered few people who remotely like iDrive. The optional Performance Package includes tighter suspension tuning, performance tires, a higher speed limiter and sport seats. However, these are so close to the ground that there is not a jack anywhere that is low enough to fit underneath so when I rotated my tires I had to drive the car up on some 2x8 boards to get it higher so I could get the jack underneath.
Redline is up to 7,000rpm from 6,500. If its four valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams are conventional by today's standards, that's about where convention stops. The 3 Series coupe and convertible are unchanged this year but will eventually move over to the new platform being used for the sedan and wagon; expect to see a new hardtop convertible for the 2008 model year. Gas mileage is pretty good for a 6 cyl automatic, highway mileage is really good. But this engine, codenamed N52, breaks new ground. The only downside has been the breakdown and rather expensive replacement of hoses, gaskets, pumps, etc. The 3-Series sedan now comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission to send power to the rear wheels, replacing the old five-speed.
We'd have no problem living with it, but the 330i automatically gets an upgrade called Logic 7. But there it is — one. We received mixed comments from onlookers, with more favorable than not. Have you had any problems with the car? The clutch is too eager to return and does not match well with the awesome steering, powerful and refined engine, and firm brakes. A rigid structure is crucial to its success and performance in virtually every other respect. For this year at least, buyers have the unique opportunity of comparing the new with the old. The sedan's and wagon's stability control system integrates several brake-related features, such as wiping the pads in the rain wet brakes don't stop too well and snugging the pads to the rotors when the driver lifts off the throttle, which increases brake responsiveness.
The main navigation screen displays an easily understood menu. And even at circuit speed it is unflappable: you can turn off all the electronics, turn too fast into a corner, stamp on the brakes and all it does is shrug off the speed. Burr walnut trim is now standard, and there's a lot of it on the dash and doors. Great handling, great mileage, beautiful interior not cheap looking like some japan alternatives , very comfy dispite the run flats , and for a 7 yr. There have been a few computer system glitches but we expected that in a used car, nothing we've had to address yet. The soft vinyls and plastics in the new 3 Series sedans are an improvement in both touch and appearance, and they put the car more closely in line with the best cars in this class for materials and workmanship.
I've been driving it nine years, put over 100k miles on it, and only routine maintenance and repairs in those years. The 2006 3 Series structure was designed to meet or exceed all safety tests and standards worldwide. Without iDrive, the 330i cabin proved a generally fine partner for the business of driving. The passenger side has a sloped, vertical door pull, while the driver's door lays the door pull horizontally in the arm rest. Be it a motorway slog, quick trip to the shops or a run along a nice A road. The 320d diesel engine, with a new common-rail system, delivers now 163 hp and has 251 lb-ft of torque.
With six speeds, the same advantages apply here as with the manual. And after more than a year, doing so answered convincingly our biggest question about 3 Series ownership: How do they hold up? The lower part of the crankcase, called the bedplate, is also cast from ultra-light magnesium alloy. It gave me very little trouble mechanically and the interior and exterior held up very well. What's best is its linear quality, or the steady supply of acceleration-producing torque at any speed. Technology is not a bad thing, mind you. The engine's torque band is wide enough that precise gear choice would not be a problem even with a manual, and the six-speed automatic's closer ratios decrease engine speed changes when shifting. Dimensionally, the new 3 is ever so slightly larger than before, but still on the compact side, especially in the rear.
The gauge cluster is a to clarity. Other innovations, including an electric coolant pump and variable-volume oil pump, further improve efficiency. And you don't have to give up a comfortable ride to get this kind of athleticism. So this top-of-the-line 3-series is quicker and more economical than before. A touch of the menu button next to the iDrive control resets the system back to the main menu at any time. The 330i gets power adjustments with three memory positions coded to the key.
